3 Women-Owned Businesses to Support This Black Friday

BY SOPHIE BAKSHI

In 2022, global businesses generated over $65 million in revenue from Black Friday sales alone. The majority of this revenue was associated with retail giants like Walmart and Amazon. However, in recent years, increasing efforts have been made to highlight small businesses during the holiday shopping season, with the day after Black Friday being dubbed “Small Business Saturday.” Small Business Saturday (SBS) is a pivotal day for small business owners.

I spoke to Kiran Mehra, founder of Goldspot, one of the first e-commerce luxury pen shops launched in 2001, to hear about the impact of Black Friday and SBS on her business. Mrs. Mehra said, “Black Friday is still officially our biggest sales kickoff and allows for most of our corporate and personal gift sales.” She isn’t alone – 55% of business owners anticipate that SBS will significantly contribute to their holiday sales.

With that said, this upcoming Black Friday and Small Business Saturday are great opportunities to shop small. And if you’re like me, you’ve been keeping a close eye out for small women-owned businesses to support. I’ve decided to compile my top 3 budding woman-owned businesses that you should consider supporting when the shopping spree begins.

MERIT BEAUTY

Merit’s cosmetics, like its two-in-one foundation and concealer stick, are multi-functional and quick to use. You can never have enough candles, especially when they’re from Hummingbird Candle Co. When Tianna Dean founded the company in January of 2019, sustainability and inclusivity were at the forefront of her mind. This is why Hummingbird Candles are made with earth-friendly ingredients by a team of womxn employees. In the spirit of the holidays, Hummingbird Candle Co. is offering $10 off candle purchases of $45 with the code “Santa Baby.”

Purely Elizabeth

Struggling to find nutritious but enjoyable snacks? So was founder Elizabeth Stein during her holistic nutrition journey. The lack of nutritious snacking options on grocery store shelves inspired her to launch her company, Purely Elizabeth, in 2019. The company offers a wide variety of gluten free, vegan, non-GMO granolas and cereals.
