Summer Writing Workshop 2022

GIRLS WHO START

Congratulations

to the authors of the 3 winning articles from the GWS Summer Writing Workshop!

  • “How Businesses in Black Wall Street Helped Their Community’s Economy Grow”

My name is Suomo Quarshie. I reside in Silver Spring, MD and I am an 8th Grader at Sidwell Friends School in Washington DC. In school, I enjoy science and doing fun activities like labs. Outside of school, I like drawing and making digital art with Procreate. I also play soccer and enjoy spending time with my family and cousins. I recently started a small jewelry business and currently have a shop on Etsy. In the future I want to do something in the medical field.

  • “Women Owned Clothing Brands That You Should Buy From Instead of Fast Fashion”

My name is Sari Brownlee. I was born in Washington, D.C. but moved to Chicago and lived there for 12 years. I just moved back into the D.C. area a year ago and am now a 9th grader at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School. My interests include fashion, style, and pop culture, and I aspire to continue exploring these topics as a writer or editor of a fashion magazine in a big city.

  • “Bringing Girl Power to the Middle Eastern Countries”

My name is Ariana Tavakkoli and I’m 11 years old. I’m a 6th grader at Sidwell Friends School. I enjoy reading, tennis, and sewing as well as learning different languages with my sister, especially Chinese, Spanish, and Farsi. My passion for languages has inspired me to write a book in Chinese. I am currently working on French and Spanish storybooks. My hope is to help spread my love of languages by giving others the opportunity to learn them through these books. I also dream of having my own fashion brand that people all around the world can enjoy!

recap

And that’s a wrap on the Girls Who Start Summer Writing Workshop! Thank you to all who participated! With over 50 sign-ups from around the world, the workshop, taught by the GWS Publication Team, hosted young journalists in grades 1 through 12 and featured two guest speakers. Each student brainstormed, researched, drafted, revised, and eventually produced an article about a topic related to women in business. It’s been an exciting past few weeks, and we are immensely proud of every student’s growth throughout the workshop.

We have selected 3 outstanding articles from our writing workshop participants to be featured on the GWS Publication and the GWS website! Get ready to read some amazing writing when we start publishing their articles in the fall!
